NetMail 3.6 Release Candidate Available

The NetMail 3.6 release candidate code is available through MyRealBox's FTP site.

Once again it is applied as a patch over and existing 3.52 installation.

For those of you who aren't yet familiar with the new features in 3.6 here's a portion of the readme below:

Administration

1. In WebAdmin on individual user account properties you can now view and edit: Immediate Purge of deleted messages, Signatures, Address book settings.

2. There is a new entry on individual user accounts to allow an administrator to set a default Sent Items folder.

3. There is a new entry on individual user accounts to allow an administrator to set a default Drafts folder.

4. The above settings can also be applied to a Parent Object.

5. An administrator can now set a default parent object. This can be set by editing the Messaging Server object. Any settings configured on the assign parent object will apply to all users on the system, unless they have an explicitly defined parent object or have individual settings that are configured to override the default parent. This can be used to set a default Drafts and Sent Items folder for the entire system.

6. Accounts created in TOM can have their eDirectory account disabled by default. To do so you will need to use a tool that can edit the attributes of an object (such as the Other tab in ConsoleOne) and add TomDisableNDSLoginForNewUsers:1 to the NIMS:TOMOptions on the Parent Object.

7. You can use Universal Passwords with NetMail and eDirectory 8.8. You will need to have a password policy defined, the default login method needs to be set for each user (or container) and you need to set NDSD_TRY_NMASLOGIN_FIRST=true. WebAccess Template

1. You can now create rules that contain a “reply with” option.

2. You can define a Drafts folder under options.

3. When composing a new message there is a Save button if a draft folder has been defined. This will save a copy of the email to the drafts folder which can be worked on later.

4. Embedded images can now be displayed in the WebAccess template.

5. Can set a preference to copy automatically generated messages to the Sent Items folder.

6. Support for PNG graphics.

NetMail Template
A new template is included called the “NetMail” template. It has been completely redesigned and has many new features. Please see the instructions in the installation section for how to add this template to your system. Some of the new features include:

1. The new features included above in the WebAcess template.

2. AJAX based implementation, allowing it to be significantly smaller that the previous WebAccess template.

3. A more streamlined look and feel, with a more intuitive user interface.

4. A message preview window.

5. The ability to double click a message in the message list to open a message.

6. Right click functionality for many of the common tasks.

7. Auto -save draft feature-As long as a user is actively creating a message in the compose window the connection to NetMail will never time out, after 3 minutes of inactivity the message will automatically be saved as a draft, and the default timeout timer will begin. If they resume typing the counter will be reset.

8. New contact management interface-The address book is now a folder within the main window.

9. Ability to create Groups within the address book.

10. Messages can be selected in the main window use family keystrokes such as CTRL-A to select all, CTRL-click to select many individual messages, and SHIFT-click to select a series of messages.

11. CTRL-N or ALT-N is a new shortcut to create a new messages in IE and Safari.

12. Calendaring has a new interface

13. There is a calendar quick view window on the left hand side to quickly see the calendar items for the day.

14. Appointments can be created by highlighting on the calender itself and dragging over the time desired.

Assuming all goes well the plan on shipping the full release will be November 5th.

Just got the latest news from Novell on GroupWise :

Because of near-shoring activities, there will be more people working on GroupWise after October than there has been for several years. A lot of this staffing is complete and more will come. Knowledge transfer is happening and Novell is very optimistic about how much this team can affect Quality Control, maintenance work and ongoing new development.

GroupWise has a solid roadmap, this roadmap is committed to throughout the organization... Bonsai is a great release and much anticipated. The Monterrey release will be just as exciting.

Winsock Suite Update

A Winsock Suite Update has been released. This contains fixes for WebAccess.

WSPSSL.NLM
- Because of the NILE changes, WSPSSL had to be changed to be able to manage the TCP window differently. This affected SSL connections to the server including FTP and Groupwise Webaccess among others. Symptoms would include TCP window going to zero. Webaccess stops responding.
The updated WSPSSL.NLM can be used and is backwards compatible but if the new NILE is used, you must also use the updated WSPSSL in this patch. Bug 269502, Bug 278932
- Fixed a problem where GroupWise Webaccess stopped responding because of Winsock was backlogged. Bug 259478
- Fixed ABend: Kernel detected an attempted context switch while holding a spinlock caused by some of new code put in for NILE.

If anyone is interested in a windows build please let me know. As a standard warning this is Beta code, I've tried to have it tested as much as possible, but odds are you will find issues beyond what we've already found, which of course is the reason for this Beta. Critical issues we will do everything we can to fix immediately, so please post anything critical to this list and also email me directly so I can work with you to make sure we fix them quickly.

You'll find a readme of sorts in the root after you extract the files. It explains how to install the update and lists some of the new features you may want to try out. It also lists some of the issues we have not resolved as of yet. The install is simple, but this version does require you have a previous install of NetMail 3.52. Once you have that system setup it's basically the same as applying any patch. Just extract the file at the root of the server you want to patch. One thing you will have to do is create the NetMail template in WebAdmin by hand. Instructions for doing so are included in the readme.

The back out plan is simply apply the F patch over top. You may also want to remove the new NetMail template from WebAdmin as well.

Some important limitations that I want to stress are that the new NetMail template is currently English only, and also some of the new features that have been added to the old WebAccess template are not yet localized. Also there hasn't been any help added to the new template yet, but I think you'll find it to be quite intuitive.

One issue not mentioned in the readme is that you'll run into some styling issues in IE6 that we haven't worked out yet, for best results you'll want to try the new template in FireFox or Internet Explorer 7.

Please post any issues you find that aren't covered in the readme to this list, that way we can get everyone involved with making this as bug free of a release as possible.

I'm very excited about the direction the new template is going and hope that you will be as well. Please let us know your opinions of the look and feel of the new interface. For those of you who can't help with the Beta, I'll be updating myrealbox.com on Wednesday so everyone can check it out.

Bonsai Update

We will support upgrading from GroupWise 6.5 to Bonsai.

We have not officially announced the version number for Bonsai. I will check with marketing and try and reply soon.

Bonsai will still use ConsoleOne. During the Bonsai time frame, we have developed a Java API for a future administration console. That console will most likely not be based on ConsoleOne or iManager. We are still designing the final delivery. It will probably be web based and SOAP enabled. We plan to put SOAP on top of the Java API.

Bonsai will still be eDirectory dependent. However, we plan to decouple this dependency in "Monterrey". If you have eDir, you will have more functionality, but we plan to support 'any' LDAP compliant directory.

Interview with Dean Lythgoe

Q: (by Erno de Korte - GroupWiseR) Can you introduce yourself to our readers? What exactly is it that you do in your daily work? And apart from that, any hobbies? What exactly is it that you do as a Director of Engineering for GroupWise ?

My name is Dean Lythgoe. I have been with Novell for 17 years and I have worked on GroupWise for 14 of those years. I have worked as a developer, manager and now Director. I have been mostly involved with the Windows Client, but I have also worked on WebAccess, Linux/Mac Client, Administration, etc. Most of my time is spent on engineering schedules, testing coordination, Support Issues, Customer briefings, business plans, Design meetings, Defect reviews, Partner relations and technology reviews. However, I also spend a great deal of time doing people management, product promotions, analyst reviews, outward-bound communications, writing articles, reviewing business plans and proposals, and reviewing contracts.

In my personal life, I like to play a lot of basketball. I coach my daughter's soccer team and I love to watch my son play football. I watch a lot of movies and am a big TV drama fan. I also love to watch the Utah Jazz!

Q: As Director of Engineering, Ken Muir was a very outward-bound communicator, with a lively presence at events like BrainShare, GWAVACon en the GroupWiseR EMEA Tour. This was very well received by the audience, will you be following his lead on this?

Absolutely!! I have been an active participant in several events including BrainShare Salt Lake, BrainShare Barcelona and South America. I have recently presented at GWAVACon Asia Pac (May) in Australia. This fall I will be at the GroupWise Advisor in Miami and later in GWAVACon Berlin. I will also be making plans to participate in some of the GroupWiseR events and tours.

Q: Can you say something about the GroupWise future directions?

GroupWise has a very bright future with a lot of very exciting things that have recently happened, that are currently happening and that are planned for upcoming release. I am, obviously, most excited about Bonsai. It is the most anticipated release of GroupWise ever. It is end-user focused. It finally delivers on a whole range of end-user requests, enhancements and must haves. It will make you more productive and make your job easier. From the Windows Client to WebAccess to Linux/Mac - there is something for everyone!!

Beyond Bonsai is also very exciting. In the next release, code named 'Monterrey', we will deliver on our administration story, further expand our APIs and will flush out ideas and cutting edge features around teaming and conferencing.

Q: When you say teaming, how does that compare to the functionality that already is in a product like Virtual Office?

Teaming builds on several of the ideas that you probably began to experience in Virtual Office. However, teaming is much more than portals into data. It is workflows, wikis, web meetings and blogs, Team Calendars, document management, and coordination and interaction with people on teams that are made up of individuals inside and outside your organization.

We are currently in BETA with Novell Teaming and Conferencing. In addition, when we go to BETA with GroupWise later this year, we will use Novell Teaming as the tool to conduct the BETA. If you are a participant, you will see first hand just how useful this technology can be for your existing organization's teams within your enterprise and in teams that exist outside your enterprise.

Q: Do you consider GroupWise to be a product that can gain more market share in the future?

The opportunity for GroupWise is tremendous! Yes, I see market opportunities as our competitors concentrate on new markets and other competitors exit this business. GroupWise and its partners have a fantastic window to grab market share and grow the GroupWise ecosystem. Collaboration is still key to every single organization and basic email and calendaring are at the heart of that collaboration. As you all know, GroupWise is so much more than just email and calendaring.

Q: Do you see people migrating away from Exchange already?

We have had several large customers this year and the demand and use for the Exchange Migration Utility is very high. People will continue to look for alternatives as they move from Exchange and from Windows. GroupWise is the obvious choice for anyone facing that decision.

Q: What about Linux? Have you dived into that already yourself?

Linux is growing. As it does, GroupWise is poised to be the only enterprise choice. I do have SLED on my laptop. I use SLED and Windows regularly. I also run WebAccess often. It is important for me to use and understand as much about each GroupWise client as I can.

Q: According to your vision, is there any functionality which isn't completely ready on Linux yet? -or - What do you think about the complaints about the GW client on Linux

There are a lot of features and functionality that has not come to the Linux Client yet. The Windows Client has had at least a 10 year head start. It is catching up fast. In Bonsai, there will be such features in the GroupWise Linux client like Notify, Change To, Home Folder, Multiple Calendars, Navigation Bar, Find, Categories and many many more.

I understand that those on Linux want everything that Windows has - We are moving in that direction as quickly as possible.

Q: What do you think is the worst feature of GroupWise that really needs some improvement very fast?

Difficult question - I would hope that we don't have a 'worst' feature. I guess that might be a little too naive. I believe the feature that needed the most work is Contact Management. Bonsai will deliver on major improvements in this area. I know you will be pleased!

After Bonsai - the biggest area that needs attention is Administration.

Q: And what do you think is the best feature?

That one is easy - Name Completion!! (I'll explain in person when I meet you!)

Q: How do you feel about the shift that GroupWise has made from NetWare to Linux? -or- Is there any future for GroupWise on NetWare?

GroupWise will continue to support NetWare and our customers on NetWare. We also expect a lot of them to migrate to newer operating systems that will take advantage of the latest hardware advancements. Our customers will find that GroupWise is just as stable and reliable on Linux.

Q: What about new GroupWise features, will they be all Linux or still available for NetWare as well?

We will continue to develop features to be available across all of the supported platforms. On the server, we have just one code base that we natively compile on all supported platforms. We will continue this practice to support all current Server operating systems and to leverage new ones as they appear.

Q: (by Zsolt Hargitai - Novell Hungary) Do you consider to release the GroupWise client as a standalone client and allowing everyone to use it for free?

We have considered this and have engineered the GroupWise client to run as a POP/IMAP client only. Current versions of GroupWise can be run like this today. We continue to discuss the advantages to making this type of decision.

Q: (by Gert ter Burg - GWCheck.com) How difficult is it supporting clients / Win Lin Mac Web OL and what is the priority?

Having so many clients is a strain on engineering resources. On Linux/Mac/Windows, we share a lot of common code. With WebAccess, we are exploring ways we can leverage backend technologies like SOAP. Outlook is the most difficult client to support. The engineering can be difficult at times.

However, there are also a lot of advantages. Our customers have more options and can deploy the operating system of choice and we will have a solution on that platform.

NetWare will be supported with the next version of GroupWise. Just posted on the NGW List:

"We still plan on supporting NetWare in Bonsai. I can't commit beyond that. My guess is that in "Monterrey", the release after Bonsai, we will very seriously consider dropping NetWare. I don't see us supporting NetWare in GroupWise longer than this given the direction of the company and the better results we get on Linux. This may change if the vast majority of our customers demand we continue to support it in Monterrey.

Updated 7.02 Hotpatch Release

Novell just released an updated 7.02 Hotpatch release to address the issues from last week's release.

Here are the issues that have been addressed:

The multi-lingual GroupWise client would show some strings in English instead of the installed language.

In WebAccess, when selecting a user from the Address Book, the To: field would appear blank. (caused by missing files in the image)

GWIA would sometimes see temporary files grow to extremely large sizes which would cause high utilization and slowness.

Right clicking and printing an attachment was crashing the client.

NOTE: If you haven't updated your POA's to 7.02 HP yet, please do so before installing any 7.02HP client, as the new client will not connect to a shipping 7.02 or earlier POA.

NOTE1a: No changes to these agents, so no need to patch those unless you are running a non US version, then suggest to patch them to get a good .fil file. GWIA changed, and Webaccess Application, but Webacc agent did not.

Lowercase Filenames on Linux

Got trouble with Uppercase files with GroupWise on Linux?
Read this tip poosted by Danita Zanre on the NGW List. You have to do two things:

1 - change all of the case of the current files. There is a freeware Windows program called "changecase" that I use for this all of the time. You could also do a dbcopy with the -m switch to do a "migrate" which in theory puts everything to lower case. I've just had better luck doing it manually myself to avoid any troubles later.

2 - run the gwcheck with /storelowercase.

If you don't both change the case and run the gwcheck you can be assured to have problems on Linux, and indeed MOST users won't even be able to log in :)

Let me explain a little bit of the tightrope that people walk with regards to this issue:

I am familiar with an organization that is about 60,000 seats in size. They are migrating about 95% of their users to GroupWise. The other 5% they intend to keep on Exchange.

A big fish like this is hesitant to let the fact that they are converting over from Exchange be published in any way, because they are still very dependant on Microsoft for things such as their Windows workstations. They don't want to displease Microsoft, and if they have gotten some sweet purchase pricing with Microsoft, they don't want to jeopardize that savings just so they can give Novell a big story.

The big big GroupWise story is this though. In FY2006 Novell's GroupWise revenue growth was up by double-digits. Did you read that article that was posted to this list somewhat recently that spoke of how in one year GW went from 6.7 % of the total market to 7.2%? This year's trend is going in the same direction. Furthermore, Novell has really put a lot of effort into their Exchange Migration solutions. There must be good reason!

Here's another thing as long as we are talking about MS. Microsoft has a tendency to try and make their slice of pie bigger and bigger, well who doesn't, you can't blame them for that. Here's how they do it. They see what third-parties are offering to go along with Exchange, and then try and duplicate those offerings in their next version. Their offerings are rarely as good as the third-party offering, but they are enough to crowd out third-parties and charge more and more for their base product. Kinda reminds me of the fact that MS Word is a defacto industry standard, but it still does not have features such as Reveal Codes as you have in WordPerfect. As I write books for publishing houses, I have to use MS Word. But I cannot tell you how many times I have had to fight MS Word, and I just can't believe they can sell such inferior software for so much $$. But it's easy when you've marginilized your competition.

Now if you are a third-party, and you don't like making solutions that Microsoft will just try and copy-cat, what do you want to do? Well here is what third-parties do:

1. Try and explain why you are better than the native Microsoft functionality. There is no reason to pull from the MS Exchange market, it's big, and there's still a lot of people that will prefer to purchase the third-party solution.

2. Move into the non-Microsoft territory, looking for new markets

In the GroupWise space we can see that in a very significant way. At BrainShare there are more GroupWise specific partners represented than for any other product that Novell has. Also, most GroupWise partners are experiencing double-digit revenue growth.

Most of the customers who are converting from MS to GW are in this scenario:

- They have MS Exchange 5.5

- MS has officially pulled support for MS Exchange 5.5 (that's not an unreasonable thing to do, Novell does the same kind of stuff)

- Customers want to get to a supported platform.

- Customers get sticker shock when they look at the latest Exchange (remember all the features that MS added to crowd out third-parties, well now they have to pay for these features whether or not they want them). Oh, and you need the monster hardware to support the base platform, even if you don't intend to use all the gadgets.

- Customers come scurrying over to GroupWise

Now to be fair, I know of a couple of customers (large ones too) that are in the process or contemplating going over to MS. However, this isn't bad news per-say. Although the ICE/groupware market it expanding, it is doing so at a slow rate. So the way MS, Novell and IBM get new customers is by cannabalizing each other's customers. MS is doing it to Novell, Novell is doing it to MS and IBM is in there too. And there are others such as Oracle and Sun. Also, in order to be fair, if your organization has a lot of money, and you feel that you are going to leverage all the features in MS Exchange, and you are willing to have functionaity that is sub-par with third-party solutions, MS Exchange could be the right business decision.

Now that I say all this, I want to also make it clear that I am not so bigoted such that I hate Microsoft. Microsoft has done much good! For example, much of the power that we have on the Intel platform just would not have been there if there wasn't the need to support the hungry Microsoft platforms. Memory and disk space are also dirt cheap now. As a result, all platforms are benefitted. Also, for those vendors who have the will to survive, along with good ingenuity do just fine, and we all benefit from it. Novell is one of these vendors, but so is Apple and Google and many other vendors. So Microsoft is a monopoly, but we all benefit indirectly if we are wise. OPEC is a monopoly too, are you benefitting from that?

Microsoft is kind of a necessary evil in someways as I see it. And the very best news as I see it is that Microsoft has been forced to admit that they cannot point a gun at Linux, because there are so many variants of Linux. So they are seeking to shake hands with Linux and Novell's the most likely candidate for MS to shake hands with, because Novell has come from the proprietary software market and are actually able to understand how to negotiate with another proprietary vendor.

So now we are in a world in which as computers continue to expand into more and more areas of our digital existence, Linux can be a big part of that growth, and MS will be guaranteed a reasonable piece of the pie too.

The reiserfs mailing list is moving to a new home: reiserfs-devel@vger.kernel.org. All current subscribers must subscribe to the new list if you wish to continue using the reiserfs mailing list.

The longer version:

One of the recurring themes on reiserfs-list over the past few years have been the spam problems and reliability issues. After the recent month-long outage, Flx and I started discussing moving the reiserfs mailing list to a more public server.

David Miller, maintainer of vger.kernel.org, has generously accepted our request to host the list there. Vger already hosts LKML and a number of other Linux-related mailing lists. They've already got outstanding antispam tactics developed and deployed on lists they host. The demands of the reiserfs list are a drop in the bucket in comparison to some of the other lists.

All current reiserfs-list subscribers must subscribe to the new list if they wish to continue to use the list. There will be no automatic migration. The reason for this is simple: If it turns out that you have problems sending email to/from vger, a silent list would be your only way of knowing. We apologize for the inconvenience, but it helps to reduce problems in the long run.

This list will remain open for the next few days in order to answer any questions that might arise. On June 9, reiserfs-list will cease to operate as a mailing list and will instead operate as an alias, forwarding all postings to reiserfs-devel.

GroupWise 7
Customers should immediately upgrade all GroupWise clients -- including the GroupWise Connector for Microsoft Outlook and all GroupWise agents (MTA, POA, GWIA & WebAccess) -- to GroupWise 7 SP2 software dated May 24, 2007 or newer. Additionally, lock out all GroupWise client software older than May 24, 2007 via ConsoleOne. If using the GroupWise Exchange Migration Utility, this must also be updated.

GroupWise 6.5
Customers running GroupWise 6.5.x should immediately upgrade all GroupWise clients, GroupWise agents (MTA, POA, GWIA & WebAccess) to GroupWise 6.5 post-SP6 dated May 22, 2007 or newer. Additionally, lock out all GroupWise client software older than May 22, 2007 via ConsoleOne.

Momentum for GroupWise is Strong

"A quick update to the community...

Novell just reported a very strong Q2 with earnings of $239 Million. GroupWise had a very nice quarter with revenues of $23.5M which shows a GROWTH (Again) of 3% compared to Q2 last year. Upgrade momentum to GroupWise 7.x continues to meet our expected targets with over 1/2 of our base now upgraded to our latest version. We migrated at least 40K seats from Exchange to GroupWise this last quarter but these are only the numbers that I am aware of. I don't know of every single migration so I suspect the number is much higher. We also experienced an up-tick in migrations from legacy Unix mail systems to our Linux offerings.

Momentum for GroupWise is strong. The company is excited about what we are seeing with the current product and excited about what is coming with GroupWise "Bonsai" and Novell Teaming + Conferencing.

Recommended tool is

DTaskManager, obviously, is a Task-Manager, but specifically engineered to give additional functionalities that the Windows bundled TaskManager (and other third party products) do not have:

1. Three different ways to close a process, as the "termination request", the standard "forced termination" with dialogue tolerance, and the "forced termination" of any type of process, bypassing all permissions (it can also terminate running system processes).

2. DTaskManager allows you to suspend and reactivate a process (as in Linux). This is useful, for example, to temporarily suspend a task that uses system resources when you don't want to terminate it (such as a DivX encoding process).

3. DTaskManager allows you to select more than one process at a time, and terminate all of them "simultaneously".

4. DTaskManager does not need any useless confirmation.
